WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition Communications Director Daniel Jacobs issued the following statement following the dismissal of members who serve on the National Science Board, which governs the National Science Foundation (NSF):

America’s economic competitiveness and technological leadership depend on robust and sustained investments in basic scientific research. The reported dismantling of the advisory board that helps guide the nation’s basic research funding and ensures alignment with national priorities puts the United States at a significant disadvantage.

For decades, the National Science Board has delivered targeted investments in fundamental research at colleges and universities across the country, helping us lead the world in emerging fields that drive unparalleled innovation, propel economic growth, and fortify national security. Abruptly removing this layer of expert counsel puts our nation’s scientific enterprise and technological dominance at risk.

As the United States faces intensifying global competition, we cannot afford moves that weaken the integrity of our research ecosystem or erode scientific independence.
