The Science Coalition Recognizes Congressman David Valadao with Champion of Science Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition (TSC) announced U.S. Representative David Valadao (R-CA-22) as a 2026 Champion of Science in recognition of his commitment to federal investments in basic scientific research at U.S. colleges and universities.

As a prominent member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Valadao helps advance funding for scientific research, including programs focused on agriculture, healthcare, and defense. He consistently advocates for federally funded research to support farmers and maximize agricultural yields.

The University of California System (UC), a TSC member comprised of 10 campuses, nominated Congressman Valadao for the award.

“Congressman Valadao’s leadership in support of federally funded research is critical to advancing discoveries that strengthen California’s economy, improve lives and keep our nation competitive,” said UC President James B. Milliken. “The University of California is grateful for his continued commitment to the research and innovation taking place across UC campuses every day, and we congratulate him on this well-earned recognition."

“It's an honor to be recognized by The Science Coalition, and I appreciate the University of California for nominating me,” said Congressman Valadao. “Federal investments in science make a real difference in the Central Valley, from helping our farmers stay competitive to creating good-paying jobs and strengthening our local economy. The University of California and other California higher education institutions are important

partners in our region and play a key role in advancing research that benefits California and the country, providing the workforce that drives this ecosystem.”

For over 30 years, TSC has recognized more than 100 members of Congress as Champions of Science for their commitment to federal funding for fundamental scientific research. Each champion is selected based on their voting records, bill sponsorships, letters of support, and other activities that further scientific discovery and innovation.

This year’s Champion of Science awards were designed and 3D printed under the direction of Dr. Denis Cormier, Earl W. Brinkman Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, a leading TSC member institution.
