The Science Coalition Celebrates Representative Don Bacon with Champion of Science Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Science Coalition (TSC) announced U.S. Representative Don Bacon (R-NE-02) as a 2026 Champion of Science, honoring his leadership in securing federal investments in basic scientific research that strengthen the United States' national security, public health, and agricultural resilience.

The Champion of Science award recognizes members of Congress who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to federal scientific research funding as a catalyst for discovery, innovation, and U.S. economic competitiveness.

Drawing on his background as a Brigadier General and former electronic warfare and intelligence officer, Representative Bacon has used his role as Chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation and as a member of the House Agriculture Committee to advance research priorities tied to real-world security and food system challenges.

He has led efforts to create U.S. Department of Agriculture centers of excellence and grant programs for agricultural security; supported the development of the Department of Homeland Security’s National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center and the Department of War’s National Strategic Research Institute, both at the University of Nebraska (NU); and supported strengthening our nation's competitiveness through Congressional proposals such as a Technology Competitiveness Council.

Congressman Bacon was nominated for this recognition by NU, a TSC member institution.

“Congressman Bacon is a dedicated champion of the University of Nebraska and the power of research to improve lives across our state and around the country,” said Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., NU System President. “He has supported NU’s work in counterterrorism, agriculture and national security, advanced infectious disease preparedness, and other critical areas. We’re grateful for this partnership, which has enhanced national security and improved lives, both in Nebraska and across our country.”

“I am grateful to be named a Champion of Science by The Science Coalition and humbled by the University of Nebraska System’s nomination,” said Congressman Bacon. “Growing up on a farm and serving three decades in the Air Force showed me how much our safety, health, and prosperity depend on research, and I remain committed to supporting the university partnerships that drive this work forward. Science has made quality of life better for all.”

TSC has recognized over 100 members of Congress as Champions of Science for securing federal investments in basic scientific research efforts. For over 30 years, honorees have been chosen on their voting records, bill sponsorships, and other efforts to promote progress across all scientific disciplines. Congressman Bacon joins Nebraska's U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, a 2025 Champion of Science, in receiving this award.

This year’s Champion of Science awards were designed and 3D printed under the direction of Dr. Denis Cormier, Earl W. Brinkman Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, a leading TSC member institution.
