The Science Coalition Announces Congresswoman Lori Trahan as a 2026 Champion of Science

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition (TSC) named U.S. Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA-03) as a 2026 Champion of Science in recognition of her continued advocacy for federal investment in scientific research, particularly in the fields of healthcare, energy, and technology.

Throughout her tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Trahan has advanced efforts to fund research into medical treatments for a range of neurological, autoimmune, cardiovascular, and pediatric diseases. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and as co-chair of the Fusion Energy Caucus, Representative Trahan has also championed research and development projects that drive U.S. innovation in the energy and technology sectors.

“Every breakthrough starts with a question someone was brave enough to ask. Answering those questions is exactly what federal investment in basic science makes possible – and why protecting it is our most important long-term bet on the future,” said Congresswoman Lori Trahan. “I'm grateful to The Science Coalition for this recognition, and even more grateful to the researchers and scientists who make this work worth fighting for.”

Representative Trahan, a strong advocate for STEM education, was nominated for this honor by three TSC member institutions: Harvard University, Northeastern University, and Georgetown University, the Congresswoman's alma mater.

“Congresswoman Trahan advocates tirelessly for investments in fundamental scientific and biomedical research that strengthens America’s health, economy, and security,” said Alan M. Garber, M.D., Ph.D., President of Harvard University. “We see the power of the innovation economy every day in Massachusetts, but it is only through strong partnership between the federal government and research universities that we can fully harness this power. I thank Congresswoman Trahan for advancing that partnership and for championing science that changes lives and communities.”

“It’s wonderful to see Congresswoman Trahan, a dedicated Hoya, recognized as a Champion of Science,” said Robert M. Groves, Ph.D., Interim President of Georgetown University. “Her promotion of scientific research and education affirms the vital role that our nation’s researchers play in expanding knowledge and translating that knowledge for the betterment of society.”

“Congresswoman Trahan has been a steadfast advocate for scientific research and innovation, recognizing that research universities are critical to the nation’s global competitiveness,” said Northeastern University President Joseph E. Aoun. “Her leadership has ensured that research institutions can unleash new ideas that drive our economy and improve lives. We are deeply grateful to Congresswoman Trahan for her unwavering commitment to the advancement of knowledge.”

For more than 30 years, TSC has honored over 100 members of Congress as Champions of Science for their commitment to robust and sustained federal funding for fundamental scientific research. Champions are selected based on their voting records, bill sponsorships, public advocacy, and efforts to advance scientific discovery and innovation.

This year’s Champion of Science awards were designed and 3D printed under the direction of Dr. Denis Cormier, Earl W. Brinkman Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, a leading TSC member institution.
