WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition’s Communications Director, Daniel Jacobs, issued the following statement after Congress and the White House failed to avert a government shutdown and come to an agreement on federal spending:

“The volatility and uncertainty caused by a government shutdown will further undermine our nation’s ability to maintain its technological and scientific leadership. Compounding the severe cuts we’ve already seen to basic scientific research at our colleges and universities, the cessation of federal operations and outlays weakens our competitive edge and diminishes the benefits that scientific discovery brings to every American."

“Robust and sustained federal investments in fundamental university research help us lead the world in technology and innovation. At a time of growing global competition, we cannot afford to lose these critical drivers of economic prosperity, health, and national security."

“We encourage Congress to get back to the negotiating table as soon as possible and reopen the government to ensure federal funding remains on track.”
