WASHINGTON – The Science Coalition (TSC) released the following statement in advance of President Biden’s State of the Union address, urging both his administration and Congress to work across the aisle to strengthen the U.S. research enterprise:

“In his first State of the Union address since the passage of the historic CHIPS and Science Act, we encourage President Biden to use this moment to spotlight the foundational role federally funded scientific research plays in achieving our nation’s highest aims,” said TSC President Laura Kolton. “A strong research enterprise, built on consistent, predictable funding, is integral to future economic growth, the national defense, and a STEM workforce ready and able to tackle tomorrow’s challenges. CHIPS has already galvanized investments into industries of the future, from artificial intelligence to biotechnology, but Congress and the administration both have more work to do.

“In his speech tonight, President Biden should further this momentum by laying out his plan to work across the aisle to secure the long-term funding federal research agencies still need to fulfill the bill’s objectives. We urge them to reach a bipartisan agreement on a long-term spending measure that prioritizes American research as soon as possible.”
