Science Coalition Lauds President’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership
President Obama today announced an Advanced Manufacturing Partnership among federal research agencies, universities and industry to identify relevant research agendas and technological opportunities that will help revitalize U.S. leadership in advanced manufacturing. The initiative was announced during a meeting with CEOs and university leaders at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and stems from recommendations of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) on public-private partnerships to create new jobs and new technologies within the advanced manufacturing sector in the United States.

President’s NC Trip Showcases the Role Scientific Research Plays in Driving the Economy
Today President Barack Obama and the members of his Jobs and Competitiveness Council will visit Durham, North Carolina-based Cree, Inc., a leading manufacturer of energy-efficient LED lighting with over 4,000 employees, 2,000 of which are in the United States. Cree is an example of the significant economic payback on federally funded scientific research as it is one of many American companies that can directly trace its founding to breakthrough research conducted at a university and sponsored by a federal agency.

Vice President Biden, University Leaders Discuss Impact of Stimulus on Research and Innovation
The presidents of six leading research universities and two higher-education associations joined Vice President Joe Biden and White House science advisor Dr. John Holdren this morning to discuss the scientific research and related activities that have been made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). New York State the Focus of Congressional Hearing on How Research and Innovation Fuel Local Economies
At a hearing today on Capitol Hill, experts discussed how federally funded university research drives innovation that contributes to local economies. The hearing, “Fueling Local Economies: Research, Innovation and Jobs,” was conducted by the congressional Joint Economic Committee and chaired by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). Expert witnesses focused on the New York State economy and included Dr. Samuel Stanley, president of Stony Brook University; Zachary Shulman, senior lecturer of entrepreneurship at Cornell University’s Johnson School of business and managing partner at Cayuga Venture Fund; and Dane Stangler, Kauffman Foundation researcher on behalf of Dr. Robert Litan, vice president of research and policy at the Kauffman Foundation and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Stony Brook and Cornell universities are members of The Science Coalition.

Collectively, these 100 companies employ well over 100,000 people and have annual revenues approaching $100 billion. Universities Highlight Benefits of Stimulus Research Funding
February 17, 2010 – On the first anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) – the economic stimulus – the nation’s research universities today provided nearly 100 examples of how a relatively small element of the measure is paying outsize short- and long-term dividends for the nation. Of the $787 billion contained in the ARRA, $21.5 billion is allocated for research and science infrastructure.

Recovery Act-Funded Research Projects Aid Communities Across the Country
In the five months since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), thousands of research-related awards have been made, supporting important scientific efforts across the country. ARRA delivered the largest increase in basic research funding in American history - $21.5 billion. The bulk of the money is for scientific research and education projects, while $3.5 billion is allocated for research facilities and capital equipment. Universities are helping researchers apply for ARRA funding and the federal science agencies tasked with distributing that money are reviewing tens of thousands of grant applications – all in a compressed timeframe and under new reporting requirements. As a result, in every state and the District of Columbia, ARRA-funded research grants are creating jobs, allowing the purchase of equipment, and supporting science-related construction projects.

House R&D Caucus and Science Association Leadership Link Science Leadership Link Science Research to Economic Recovery
Representatives Rush Holt (D-NJ) and Judy Biggert (R-IL), Co-Chairs of the House Research and Development Caucus, joined with members of The Science Coalition (TSC) and the Science Engineering and Technology Working Group (SETWG) today to urge Congress and the Obama Administration to keep funding for science research strong. Basic Research Critical to America's Economic Recovery
The Science Coalition (TSC) today urged Congress to move swiftly to pass economic recovery legislation that includes strong funding for key science agencies including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). While the House-passed version of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included vital investments for these agencies, those funding levels were decreased in the Senate-passed version. To prove the link between research and economic stimulus, the group released specific regional examples of how federally funded research supports local economies through job creation, spin-off companies, and supporting industries.
